Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has turned the page on one of the most arduous chapters of his career, stepping back onto the competitive stage for the first time in more than three years as VfL Osnabrück claimed victory over Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga.
The Ghana international entered the contest in the 66th minute, completing 24 minutes on the pitch in what represented far more than a routine substitute appearance.
For Kyereh, it was the culmination of a painstaking rehabilitation journey that began after he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury while training with SC Freiburg in February 2023.
The setback abruptly brought his momentum to a halt and condemned him to an extended spell on the sidelines. His previous competitive outing had come on February 11, 2023, when Freiburg suffered a 2-0 Bundesliga defeat against VfB Stuttgart.
What followed was a prolonged battle with injury, rehabilitation, and uncertainty, stretching to almost three years and testing the 29-year-old’s resolve to continue playing at the highest level.
Kyereh has previously spoken candidly about the psychological toll of his absence, admitting that the lengthy recovery period forced him to question whether his playing career could continue.
His long-awaited comeback comes after he made the switch to Osnabrück as a free agent this summer, following the expiration of his Freiburg contract.g
The move has also reunited Kyereh with Timo Schultz, the coach under whom the midfielder flourished during his time at FC St. Pauli. Their previous association produced arguably the most influential period of Kyereh’s career and offered a familiar environment as he embarked on another chapter.
Now, after years of rehabilitation and uncertainty, Kyereh can once again call himself a competitive footballer.
His return also rekindles hopes of seeing the midfielder back in the Ghana setup. Kyereh has earned 18 caps for the Black Stars and was included in Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he scored a memorable goal against South Korea.
For a player whose career was placed on hold by a devastating injury, those 24 minutes against Bochum carry considerable significance. They mark the end of a painful exile and the beginning of a fresh chapter in Kyereh’s attempt to reclaim his place in professional football.
