Gambian international Yaya Bojang has officially completed a permanent move to Portuguese Liga side FC Alverca, signing a three-year contract after leaving Danish club Odense Boldklub.
The highly-rated defender attracted strong interest from across Europe before opting for Portugal, with FC Alverca winning the race ahead of Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv and Belgian Pro League side Sporting Charleroi.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Bojang’s agent, Saikou Saidy, revealed that the decision was based on the player’s long-term development rather than simply joining the biggest club interested.
“We have had a meeting with Dynamo Kyiv, who are competing in Europe, and for Yaya, he needs to play given his age. We considered this along with the project from Alverca, and we were convinced by their approach.”
According to Saidy, Alverca presented a clear sporting vision that places Bojang at the heart of the club’s defensive plans.
“The club has a rich history of nurturing young players, and we believe he will get opportunities to play, with the project aiming for him to be the centre of the defence. The Portuguese league is also recognised as one of the top six leagues in Europe.”

The defender also attracted interest from Belgium, but his representatives believe Portugal offers the best pathway towards achieving his long-term ambitions.
“We have received interest from Charleroi. We have explored all these options, and we believe Portugal is the best choice for him because Yaya’s dream is to play in the Premier League, and we believe he can attract that level of attention easily.”
Bojang arrives in Portugal following a solid campaign with Odense, where he made 30 appearances across all competitions. The 22-year-old started 11 matches, accumulated 1,224 minutes of playing time and continued to establish himself as one of The Gambia’s promising young defenders. He has also earned three senior caps for the Scorpions.
Bojang’s move to FC Alverca represents another important step in his career as he looks to establish himself in Portuguese football and continue his rise on the international stage. With regular playing opportunities expected, the Scorpions defender will be aiming to develop further and move closer to fulfilling his ambition of one day playing in the English Premier League.
