Former Ghana international Yussif Chibsah in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa expressed belief that the Black Stars are rediscovering their football identity following Wednesday’s emphatic 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic in Meknes, Morocco.
The win, sealed by goals from defenders Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku, Thomas Partey, captain Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, moved Ghana to the brink of qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For Sulemana, now with Atalanta, it was a particularly emotional moment as he scored his first goal for the national team after 22 appearances.

Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, Chibsah praised the performance and said it was reminiscent of Ghana’s glory days.
“We are getting back to what we were used to, our DNA. Gone were the days when we used to humiliate countries like the Central African Republic and Comoros,” he said. “This is a sign that we are getting closer to where we used to be and where we were known as a football nation.”
The former Asante Kotoko midfielder, who is currently Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAF) Head of Player Relations, noted that confidence among the players was high, thanks to their recent club form, and that reflected in the team’s dominance.
Mohammed Kudus scored his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur, Antoine Semenyo bagged a brace, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku netted a stunning strike in an impressive weekend for Ghanaian forwards in Europe.
“The Black Stars were composed. We saw over the weekend that most of our players were on the scoresheet for their clubs, so it was expected they would come into this game in high spirits. We can’t say everything was perfect because there were some shortfalls, but it was a massive win, and we are almost at the World Cup,” he added.
Ghana now needs just a point in their final qualifier against the Comoros on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium to confirm their place at the 2026 tournament.
“The players should keep their cool and not allow any tension to overtake them,” Chibsah advised. “It’s a normal game, just like the previous one. They shouldn’t lose focus, become complacent, or underrate Comoros. They must finish the job and win the game.”

The Black Stars have qualified for the World Cup four times, in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, and Sunday’s result could seal a historic fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
