Less than a week after wrapping his move to Iceland top-flight side IBV Vestmannaeyjar, Ugandan international and versatile defender Elvis Bwomono exclusively speaking to Footy-Africa has laid his targets and goals bare for the ongoing 2025.
The 26-year-old put pen to paper on a short-term contract until the end of the season, marking a return to a team he featured for between 2022 to 2023. His more recent exploits were in Scotland for top division outfit St. Mirren.
Bwomono underlined that his target is to help IBV Vestmannaeyjar avoid relegation. He also asserted that he is keen on using the short stint at the club to re-load his career for bigger future moves.
“First, I’m not at IBV Vestmannaeyjar for a holiday or something like that, I’m at the club to work for the team. The biggest focus is to get the team from the relegation playoff positions to as high as possible,” he said in the exclusive interview with Footy-Africa.
“These are attainable targets and will be achieved if we work as a team, because with what I’ve seen, the quality is obviously there. There’s no debate about how good the players are. The coaches are brilliant and the facilities are immaculate, so it’s an environment for success. I want to keep improving as well, because the last few months haven’t been pretty on my end. This is an opportunity to showcase my game again, I believe in myself and I know I will be back to the top levels. To do it at a club I know well is important on how fast I’ll adapt.”
It should be recalled that he had initially joined St. Mirren in December 2023 from IBV and made his debut in January 2024 against Celtic. Over his time in Paisley, Bwomono featured in over 43 appearances across all competitions, offering versatility across the backline and midfield.
Bwomono originally joined IBV in May 2022 from South End and quickly became a regular starter, amassing 44 league appearances before moving to Scotland. At South End, which is his boyhood club, he featured 133 times across four campaigns.
Meanwhile, at the international level, the 26-year-old made his debut for the Uganda Cranes in November 2020 during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan. He has since amassed 23 senior national team caps.
