Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika faces an uncertain future at Belgian side Club Brugge heading into the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old has reportedly turned down a contract extension earlier this year, which has put several top European clubs on high alert. Turkish champions Galatasaray are among the clubs that are closely monitoring his situation and are expected to renew their interest when the transfer window opens.

The Cimbom had pushed hard to sign him during the January transfer window, and were close to sealing a deal before Brugge pulled the plug on negotiations. The Belgian side was unwilling to lose the Nigerian midfielder midway into the season, especially with a title challenge on the line.

Onyedika joined Club Brugge in 2022 from FC Midtjylland and has since developed into an important member of the team. He played a major role in their 2023–24 league title triumph and their Belgian Cup success last season.

The 25-year-old has proven his worth as a reliable defensive midfielder who can also operate in the central midfield role, given his string work rate and intense pressing ability.

Summer transfer window watch: Three Nigerian players who could secure big moves

He has made over 180 appearances for the club, including 41 outings this season across competitions. However, his involvement has reduced slightly in recent matches and with his current contract set to expire next summer, Club Brugge are now open to selling him rather than risk losing him for free with talks over an extension not progressing.

Potential transfer breakdown

According to Transfermarkt, Onyedika is valued at around €23 million, making him one of the most valuable players at Club Brugge and the fifth most valuable Nigerian player.

However, Club Brugge are reportedly hoping to negotiate a deal for a fee that is slightly above that figure and would see the Nigerian become one of their most expensive departures in history.

The move could also see Onyedika linkup with compatriot Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray, if it eventually goes through in the summer.

Five African players who missed out on moves during the winter transfer window

While Galatasaray view him as a long-term midfield solution, they may need to move quickly, given the interest from clubs in the Premier League.
