Nigerian prospect Benjamin Ifenna Dorgu has completed a move to Bulgarian top-flight side Botev Plovdiv, Footy-Africa can exclusively report.

The 19-year-old striker, who is the younger brother of Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu, has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2028. While Patrick currently represents Denmark at international level, Benjamin remains eligible to play for Nigeria.

The highly-rated youngster previously featured for FC Køge in the Danish second division before sealing his move to Bulgaria and he made his debut for Botev Plovdiv on Saturday during their 2-0 defeat to Cherno More in the Efbet League.

“It’s a step up compared to his previous Division 2 club. He is positive about the move and ready to compete in the Efbet League – Bulgarian elite league,” PDV Sports Agency exclusively told Footy-Africa.

Benjamin Dorgu was introduced in stoppage time for Brazilian forward Franklin Mascote, although he could do little to prevent the Canaries from slipping to their 14th league defeat of the season as they continue their push for a UEFA Conference League qualification spot.

Botev Plovdiv have a strong reputation for developing African talent over the years and the club currently have the likes of Samuel Kalu, who won bronze medal winner with Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament and youngster Williams Chimezie in the squad, which could help Dorgu settle quickly in Bulgaria.

With the 19-year-old still eligible to represent the Super Eagles, head coach Eric Chelle and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) are expected to monitor his development, with hopes of convincing him to switch allegiances.

For now, Benjamin Dorgu will be keen on making an immediate impact at Botev Plovdiv, with their next match coming against Arda Kardzhali on Tuesday.
