Aston Villa vs Liverpool match preview

Aston Villa head into this clash on the back of a disappointing 2-2 draw with relegated Burnley in their last outing as they failed to move above Liverpool in fourth place. Villa have enjoyed an impressive campaign so far and are on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Unai Emery’s men are also in the final of the Europa League, where they will face Freiburg, leaving them with a double pathway to reach next season’s Champions League. They are currently fifth in the standings with 59 points, same as the Reds with just two games to play.

Liverpool, on the other hand, recorded a 1-1 draw against the out-of-form Chelsea in their last outing. The Premier League champions need to win one of their last two matches to seal a spot in the Champions League ahead of next season, with their final match of the season coming at Anfield against Brentford.

The Reds are fourth and are level on points with Villa, but a win here would see seal fourth spot on the standings after a difficult campaign.

Prediction

This clash promises to be an exciting one with both teams known for their attacking approach. Their recent defensive struggles also suggest there could be plenty of chances and goals in the game.

Aston Villa vs Liverpool Head-to-Head

(Last five meetings)

  • 01.11.2026 – Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa
  • 19.02.2025 – Aston Villa 2-2 Liverpool
  • 09.11.2024 – Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa
  • 13.05.2024 – Aston Villa 3-3 Liverpool
  • 03.09.2023 – Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa

Liverpool have been more dominant in this fixture in recent meetings, winning three of their last five matches and are currently unbeaten during this period.

Meanwhile, the last two meetings at the Villa Park have also ended in stalemate with nothing to separate both sides.

Recent form: Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been inconsistent in recent matches and they have won just three of their last seven games across all competitions, losing three times and recording one draw during this period.

Villa are also without a clean sheet in their last five Premier League matches and have conceded multiple times in three of these games, while they were also defeated in their last home match by Tottenham Hotspur.

Recent form: Liverpool

Liverpool were formerly on a three-game winning run in the Premier League, but are now winless in their last two outings, losing 3-2 at Manchester United and recording a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

The Reds have also failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last four matches in the league, although they have found the net in all of those matches.

Four potential destinations for Mohamed Salah amid Liverpool summer exit

Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah has missed Liverpool’s last two games with a thigh injury but should be back in time to play against Aston Villa as his exit from the club nears.

The 33-year-old’s pace and creativity with the ball could prove too much to handle for the Villa defence, giving his side an edge in the encounter.
