In an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, Mali legend and former Sevilla striker Frederic Kanoute has expressed belief that Aston Villa have the quality to overcome Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul, but has warned that the German side will provide a stern challenge on the big stage.

Kanoute, who famously lifted the UEFA Cup twice during his glittering spell with Sevilla FC, said Villa’s experience, attacking depth and tactical discipline could prove decisive in Turkey.

“Aston Villa have shown throughout this campaign that they belong among Europe’s top sides,” Kanoute exclusively told Footy-Africa ahead of the final in Istanbul.

“They have balance in the team, experience in key areas, and players who can decide matches in important moments. I think they have a slight advantage going into the game.”

The former Mali international, however, was quick to caution against underestimating Freiburg, insisting the Bundesliga outfit have earned their place in the final through resilience and collective strength.

“Freiburg are not in the final by accident,” he added. “They are organised, hardworking and mentally very strong. Teams like that are always dangerous in cup finals because they fight for every ball and never stop believing.”

Kanoute, widely regarded as one of Mali’s greatest footballers, also highlighted the unpredictable nature of European finals, drawing from his own experiences with Sevilla.

“In finals, history and form sometimes mean nothing once the whistle blows,” he said. “I remember many difficult nights in the UEFA Cup with Sevilla where people expected us to win comfortably, but it never happens that way. Freiburg will make Aston Villa work very hard for the trophy.”

The 48-year-old expects a closely contested encounter but believes Villa may eventually edge the contest through individual brilliance:

“I see a very competitive match, maybe decided by one moment of quality. Aston Villa might just have a little more creativity in attack, and that could make the difference. But Freiburg will definitely mount a formidable fight.”

The Europa League final will be staged in Istanbul, with both clubs chasing a historic European triumph.
