The 2025/26 European football season has delivered a fascinating campaign for Nigeria’s finest exports.

While some Super Eagles stars scaled the heights of domestic glory and historic clean sheets, others had to fight their way through injury and off-field controversy to salvage their reputations.

Here, we rank the top five Nigerian players who defined the European football landscape this season.

Table of Contents

  • 5. Maduka Okoye (Udinese)
  • 4. Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge)
  • 3. Ademola Lookman (Atalanta / Atletico Madrid)
  • 2. Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray)
  • 1. Paul Onuachu (Trabzonspor)

5. Maduka Okoye (Udinese)

Position: Goalkeeper

Key stat: 10 Serie A clean sheets

Maduka Okoye’s season was a triumph of resilience. The goalkeeper’s campaign began in disastrous fashion, marred by a serious injury and a lengthy suspension following a betting scandal. Yet, his response was exemplary. Upon his return, he reclaimed the number-one spot at Udinese and single-handedly anchored their defense.

Over the weekend, Okoye kept his 10th clean sheet of the Serie A season in a commanding victory over Cagliari. In doing so, he became the first Nigerian goalkeeper to achieve double-digit clean sheets in one of Europe’s top five leagues since the legendary Vincent Enyeama—ending an 11-year wait.

It is little wonder that Italian giants AC Milan and Inter Milan are heavily linked with summer moves for the shot-stopper.

4. Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge)

Position: Defensive Midfielder

Key stat: 90% passing accuracy

Since his move to Belgium in 2022, Raphael Onyedika has quietly built a reputation as one of the most reliable midfielders in the Pro League.

This season, he took his game to another level, playing a pivotal role as Club Brugge clinched yet another league title—the player’s fourth major trophy with the club.

Onyedika’s 2025/26 League profile:

Appearances: 30 (22 starts)

Passing accuracy: 90%

Accolades: Nominated for Belgium’s Best African Player

Onyedika also shone on the grandest stage, guiding Brugge back into the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. With Eintracht Frankfurt, AC Milan, Aston Villa, and West Ham keeping close tabs, a big-money move to a top-five league looks inevitable.

3. Ademola Lookman (Atalanta / Atletico Madrid)

Position: Winger/Forward

Key stat: Swift adaptation to La Liga

Ademola Lookman‘s campaign began under a cloud of uncertainty. Frozen out of the Atalanta squad early on due to a protracted transfer saga, he eventually returned to open his account against AC Milan in late October. After registering three goals and two assists in 19 games for the Italian side, Atletico Madrid secured his services in January for €27.7m—a fee that now looks like an absolute bargain.

Lookman became an instant hit at the Civitas Metropolitano. He scored crucial goals against Barcelona in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, helping Diego Simeone’s side reach the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League semi-finals.

With four goals in just eight La Liga appearances, he played a vital role in securing Atletico’s spot in Europe once again.

2. Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray)

Position: Striker

Key stat: 15 goals in 21 league matches

Victor Osimhen reaffirmed his status as one of global football’s elite marksmen by firing Okan Buruk’s Galatasaray to another Turkish Süper Lig title.

The talismanic striker scored twice last Saturday in a dramatic 4-2 comeback win over Antalyaspor to seal the championship, taking his domestic tally to an impressive 15 goals in 21 league matches.

His lethal form was not restricted to domestic action; Osimhen also found the net six times in Europe, dragging the Istanbul giants into the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 during a characteristically dominant campaign.

1. Paul Onuachu (Trabzonspor)

Position: Striker

Key stat: Süper Lig Golden Boot Winner

Taking the top spot is Paul Onuachu, who enjoyed a truly staggering individual campaign. The towering forward carried Trabzonspor’s frontline, netting 22 goals in 30 league matches to win the Süper Lig Golden Boot. To put his impact into perspective, Onuachu was directly responsible for roughly 40% of his team’s 55 league goals.

The ultimate big-game player, Onuachu scored against all of Turkey’s traditional powerhouses: Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas and set a new club record by scoring in seven consecutive league outings.

His brace led Trabzonspor to the Turkish Cup victory to complete a remarkable season.

With an overall record of 39 goals and 6 assists in 50 matches for the club, alongside a run to the Turkish Cup final, Onuachu stands out as Nigeria’s most impactful and consistent performer in Europe this season.
