Somalia’s most celebrated football referee, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, has publicly addressed the disappointment of being unable to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after reportedly being denied entry into the United States.

Artan had been selected among the 52 match officials chosen by FIFA for the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. His appointment was set to mark a historic milestone, making him the first Somali referee to officiate at the world’s most prestigious football competition.

However, that landmark achievement was cut short when entry complications prevented him from travelling to the United States, effectively ending his hopes of taking part in the tournament before it had even begun. The World Cup officially gets underway on June 11.

Despite the setback, Artan has responded with remarkable composure, choosing to focus on the future rather than dwell on the disappointment.

“Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career,” Artan said to the press.

Widely respected across African football circles for his consistency and professionalism, the Somali official revealed that both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stood by him throughout the ordeal.

“I would like to thank FIFA and CAF for all their support, and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future,” he added.

For a referee who had worked tirelessly to reach the pinnacle of international officiating, missing out on a World Cup assignment represents a significant personal blow. Yet Artan’s reaction has highlighted his resilience and commitment to the sport, with the referee determined to continue building on his already impressive career.

The experienced official also took time to acknowledge the overwhelming support he received from fans, fellow referees, players, and football stakeholders following the news.

“I want to thank the football family for their messages and wish my colleagues all the best success during the World Cup, and I look forward to joining them again in future competitions,” Artan stated.

His measured response has earned widespread admiration across the continent, with many praising the referee for handling the situation with dignity and professionalism despite the magnitude of the disappointment.

Artan remains one of Somalia’s most recognizable sporting figures and continues to be regarded as one of Africa’s leading referees. Many within the game believe he will remain a strong candidate for future FIFA tournaments and major international competitions.

While his absence leaves a noticeable gap in Somalia’s sporting representation at the World Cup, Artan’s determination to move forward suggests his journey on the global stage is far from over.
