A source within Nigerian football told Africafoot that discussions with the 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder have reached a new stage, although no final decision has been made.
“It’s an ongoing conversation. He might sway towards representing Nigeria, but the conversation is just moving to the next stage, so let’s see how things go,” the source said.
Nwaneri, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, has represented England at several youth levels, including the Under-21 side that won the 2025 European Championship.
He was also invited to join Thomas Tuchel’s England squad during preparations for the 2026 World Cup but did not make the final tournament squad.
Chukwuemeka, Nwaneri and three other Nigerian-eligible young talents
The attacking midfielder made his Premier League debut for Arsenal in September 2022 at the age of 15, becoming the competition’s youngest-ever player. He later enjoyed a breakthrough 2024-25 campaign, scoring nine goals in 37 appearances.
After loan spells at Marseille and Borussia Dortmund, Nwaneri continues to pursue regular first-team football while his international future remains unresolved.
Nigeria believe they have a chance of securing his services, but the final decision rests with the player. Neither Nwaneri nor the Nigeria Football Federation has publicly confirmed a change of allegiance.
