The pressure is already mounting in Group A as Czech Republic and South Africa prepare for a crucial World Cup showdown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Thursday night. After both sides stumbled in their opening fixtures, this encounter has quickly evolved into a must-not-lose contest for two nations desperate to reignite their campaigns.

South Africa endured a difficult start to the tournament, falling 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the World Cup. Several hours later, Czech Republic also left empty-handed after suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat against South Korea, leaving both teams rooted near the bottom of the group standings.

For the Europeans, the loss to South Korea halted a promising run of results that had seen them avoid defeat in six consecutive matches. During that stretch, they collected four victories in regulation time and progressed through two knockout qualification ties via penalty shootouts. However, defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern, with the Czech side now going five straight matches without keeping a clean sheet.

A positive result in Atlanta could dramatically reshape their path to the knockout rounds. With places available not only for the top two teams in the group but also for some of the strongest third-placed finishers, three points would provide a major boost heading into the final group fixtures.

History offers little insight into this matchup. The two nations have met only once before, sharing a thrilling 2-2 draw during the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup.

South Africa’s return to football’s biggest stage has not unfolded as hoped. Bafana Bafana are making their first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010, and ironically their latest campaign also began against Mexico.

Their defeat was largely self-inflicted. Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole experienced a nightmare outing, losing possession in the buildup to Julian Quinones‘s early opener before receiving a red card shortly after halftime for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. The dismissal left South Africa with an uphill task that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Team news

Czech Republic head coach Miroslav Koubek has no new injury concerns following the South Korea match and is expected to maintain the 3-4-2-1 setup that has become the foundation of the team’s recent success.

Captain Tomas Soucek should once again anchor the midfield alongside Alexandr Sojka. Out wide, Jaroslav Zeleny and Vladimir Coufal are expected to operate as wing-backs, while defender Ladislav Krejci, who found the net in the opener, is likely to continue in the back three.

‘They were not up to scratch’ – Idah Peterside on South Africa’s loss to Mexico

South Africa, meanwhile, must navigate the suspensions of Sithole and Themba Zwane. While Zwane’s absence may be easier to absorb after his brief substitute appearance ended in a red card, Sithole’s suspension leaves a significant gap in midfield.

Coach Hugo Broos could respond by reshaping his tactical approach. A switch from a five-man defence to a more adventurous 4-2-3-1 formation is under consideration, with Thalente Mbatha tipped to partner Jayden Adams in central midfield. Such a move could see defender Nkosinathi Sibisi make way as South Africa look for greater attacking balance.

Up front, Lyle Foster is expected to spearhead the attack alone, while Iqraam Rayners may begin the match from the bench after starting alongside Foster against Mexico.

Prediction

Neither side looked convincing in their opening matches, and both may approach this contest with caution knowing another defeat would leave qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Czech Republic possess greater experience and structure, while South Africa have enough pace and physicality to cause problems on the counterattack.

Prediction: Czech Republic 1-1 South Africa

Lyle Foster

The Burnley forward remains South Africa’s biggest attacking threat heading into this pivotal clash. Lyle Foster contributed three goals and three assists for his club last season and has developed into one of Bafana Bafana’s most reliable performers on the international stage.

With 10 goals and three assists in 32 appearances for his country, much of South Africa’s hopes of securing a positive result may rest on his shoulders.
