Ghana have been handed a timely boost ahead of their highly anticipated FIFA World Cup showdown with England, with first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi making encouraging progress in his recovery from injury.

The St. Gallen shot-stopper picked up a knock during the Black Stars’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L encounter. Following the match, Ati-Zigi underwent medical examinations, although the full findings have not yet been officially disclosed.

Concerns over his availability intensified after the 29-year-old was seen training away from the main squad on Saturday, casting doubt on whether he would be fit enough to feature against England in Boston on Tuesday.

Ati-Zigi was one of Ghana’s standout performers against Panama, delivering a string of vital saves that preserved the team’s narrow lead and secured a winning start to their World Cup campaign.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition, Ghana’s goalkeeping coach has provided an encouraging update, indicating that the goalkeeper’s rehabilitation is progressing positively under close supervision.

“We’re extremely happy with his progress. It’s day by day. Obviously, this is a medical issue collaborated with head coach Carlos Queiroz, so we’ll take it session by session,” he said.

“We’re optimistic, and the decision will be made at the right time. But one thing is for sure, we always stress the team above the individual. Any decision we make is in the best interest of the team.”

The Black Stars’ technical team, led by Carlos Queiroz, is to make a final assessment closer to matchday before deciding whether Ati-Zigi can take his place between the posts.

Should he be ruled out, Ghana still have options available. Benjamin Asare and Joseph Anang are both on standby to deputise, while Solomon Agbasi remains with the squad as additional cover despite not being included in the nation’s official 26-man World Cup squad.

Ghana head into the England fixture in confident mood after beginning the tournament with maximum points. Another positive result against the Three Lions would significantly strengthen their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds and put them in a commanding position within Group L.
