Ghana defender Marvin Senaya has received global recognition for his outstanding performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being selected in Opta’s Group Stage Best XI, rewarding a series of influential displays that have underpinned the Black Stars’ impressive campaign.
The Ghana national football team full-back has been one of the tournament’s most dependable defenders, starting all three of Ghana’s group-stage fixtures against Panama, England and Croatia while growing into one of the side’s standout performers with each passing match.
Senaya’s defining display came in Ghana’s meeting with England, where the AJ Auxerre right-back delivered a composed and commanding defensive performance against one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking teams.
Handed the difficult assignment of marking Anthony Gordon—fresh from completing a blockbuster €80 million transfer to FC Barcelona—the Ghanaian consistently won his individual battles, frustrating the winger throughout the contest and showcasing his defensive maturity on the biggest stage.
His impressive statistics across the group phase further underline why he has emerged as one of the World Cup’s leading defenders.

Senaya attempted a tournament-high 18 tackles while also winning 24 of his 38 duels, demonstrating both his aggression in regaining possession and his ability to prevail in one-on-one situations.
The numbers become even more impressive when examining advanced defensive data. In Opta’s “true tackle” metric, where defenders are rewarded for successfully making contact with the ball regardless of whether possession is immediately retained, Senaya posted a remarkable 72.0 percent success rate, placing him among the competition’s elite defensive performers.
His consistency secured him a place in Opta’s Team of the Group Stage alongside Vozinha in goal, defenders Pau Cubarsí, Diney and Nakamura.

The midfield pairing comprises Weston McKennie and Pedro Vite, while the attacking unit features an array of world-class talent including Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Vinícius Júnior and Lionel Messi.
Attention now shifts to the knockout rounds, where Senaya is expected to once again play a pivotal role as Ghana prepare to face Colombia in the Round of 32, with the Black Stars hoping their defensive leader can inspire another memorable World Cup performance.
