Ghanaian defender Nicholas Opoku rejected interest from Turkish side Gaziantep FK before completing his move to Spanish club Las Palmas, Footy-Africa can exclusively reveal.
Sources close to the defender say Gaziantep had made a strong push to sign the 27-year-old after his departure from KasΔ±mpaΕa and were confident of securing his signature.
However, Opoku was determined to pursue a fresh challenge and opted to wait for an opportunity elsewhere rather than remain in the Turkish Super Lig.
Footy-Africa understands that had Las Palmas not entered the race, the centre-back would have joined Gaziantep.
The Spanish club eventually made their move, offering Opoku the chance to return to one of Europe’s competitive leagues, a proposal the Ghana international immediately prioritised.
Las Palmas have since tied the defender to a contract until June 2028, with the club viewing his experience and leadership as key additions to their backline.
Opoku arrives after spells with Berekum Chelsea, Club Africain, Udinese, Amiens and KasΔ±mpaΕa, bringing extensive experience from across Europe and North Africa.
