Arsenal vs Coventry City match preview

Arsenal enter the clash aiming to kick off their title defence with a victory when they face the EFL Championship winners. The Gunners were crowned champions for the first time since the Invincibles in the 2003-04 season and will now be targeting a second successive title at the end of the campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s men have signed Bruno Guimaraes, Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis and Piero Himcapie on a permanent deal already this summer and are still looking to sign a new centre forward and another left winger before the window closes. The North London side have won 19 of their 33 opening day fixtures in the Premier League era, recording six draws and losing eight times

Coventry City, on the other hand, will be aiming to record a valuable result when they take to the field for their first Premier League match in 25 years. The Sky Blues finished as winners of the Championship last season and have already bolstered their squad with the addition of several new players, as they aim to challenge well and avoid an immediate return to the second division at the end of the season.

Under Frank Lampard, Coventry will be looking to cause an upset at the Emirates and go on to record one of the most shocking opening day results in Premier League history.

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka enjoyed an impressive loan spell in the second half of last season and will be aiming to carry that form into this season.

His battle against Arsenal’s midfielders will be one to watch out for in the clash and his workrate and ability to beat the press in the middle of the park could be crucial to his side’s chances.
