Nicholas Opoku is one of Ghana’s most experienced modern defenders and an accomplished centre-back whose career has taken him from the Ghanaian Premier League to Serie A, Ligue 2 and the Turkish Süper Lig.

Renowned for his physical strength, aerial ability, aggressive defending, recovery pace and composure in possession, the Kumasi-born defender has built a reputation as a dependable presence at the heart of the defence.

Currently, Opoku plays for Spanish Segunda División side UD Las Palmas, having joined the club as a free agent from Turkish side Kasımpaşa in August 2026. He signed a two-year contract running until June 30, 2028, with Las Palmas bringing in the experienced Ghanaian to strengthen their defence and help the club pursue promotion back to La Liga.

According to Transfermarkt, the 29-year-old centre-back has a current market value of €1.5 million, with the latest valuation recorded on May 21, 2026. His valuation remained at €1.5 million when he completed his free transfer from Kasımpaşa to Las Palmas. 

Opoku’s market value has fluctuated throughout his European career. His value rose after he established himself in Italy and France before settling at its current level during his later years in Turkey.

Career

Nicholas Opoku’s professional journey is a story of steady progression through African and European football, taking him from Ghana’s domestic league to some of Europe’s most competitive divisions.

• Berekum Chelsea & Club Africain (2016–2018): Opoku began his senior career with Berekum Chelsea in Ghana after developing with Kumasi Corner Babies. His performances earned him a move to Tunisian giants Club Africain in 2017. During his first season in Tunisia, he helped the club win the Tunisian Cup in 2017/18 and gained valuable experience in continental competition.

• Udinese (2018–2021): In July 2018, Opoku moved to Italian Serie A side Udinese on a four-year contract. He made his Serie A debut against Sampdoria in August 2018 and went on to make 19 league appearances for the club. However, competition for places and injuries limited his opportunities, eventually leading to a move to France.

• Amiens (2020–2024): Opoku joined Amiens initially on loan in January 2020 before making the move permanent. He remained with the French club for several seasons, becoming an experienced figure in the defence and playing extensively in Ligue 2. Across his Amiens career, he made close to 100 league appearances.

• Kasımpaşa (2024–2026): In 2024, Opoku moved to Turkish Süper Lig side Kasımpaşa. He quickly became an important member of the defence and enjoyed a productive 2025/26 campaign, making 30 league appearances and playing 2,431 minutes. His performances helped restore his profile in European football and ultimately earned him another move.

• UD Las Palmas (2026–Present): After his Kasımpaşa contract expired, Opoku joined UD Las Palmas on a free transfer in August 2026. He signed until June 2028 and was brought in to add physicality, experience and defensive leadership to a squad targeting promotion to La Liga. Opoku enters the 2026/27 season as one of Ghana’s most experienced active defenders and a player with extensive experience across several major European football systems.

Standing at 1.90 metres, he combines physical strength with speed, aggressive tackling and the ability to contribute to the build-up from the back. Las Palmas specifically highlighted his strength in duels, recovery speed and ability to initiate attacks from defence when announcing his arrival.

One of the early highlights of his European career came with Club Africain, where he helped the Tunisian giants win the 2017/18 Tunisian Cup. His performances in Africa opened the door to Serie A, where he became part of Udinese’s first-team squad and gained experience in one of Europe’s elite leagues.

His time in France subsequently provided the foundation for a long period of regular first-team football, while his two seasons with Kasımpaşa demonstrated that he could remain a reliable defender at the top level of Turkish football.
