The summer transfer window has once again underlined the growing influence of African footballers in the European transfer market, with several high-profile players securing lucrative moves to some of the continent’s biggest clubs.
For some, the transfers represent the next step in their careers. For others, however, the size of the fee and the stature of their new clubs mean there will be little room for a slow start.
Footy-Africa looks at five African players who will face significant pressure to justify their price tags at their new clubs.
Ayyoub Bouaddi — Lille to Manchester City, £86m
Ayyoub Bouaddi‘s move from Lille to Manchester City is one of the biggest transfers involving an African player this summer.
The 18-year-old Morocco international joined City for an initial £81.3m, with a further £4.3m potentially payable in add-ons, taking the deal to around £86m. He signed a five-year contract and became the most expensive teenage signing in Premier League history.
Bouaddi arrives at the Etihad Stadium after making 96 appearances for Lille and enjoying an impressive breakthrough at club and international level. He also started five of Morocco’s six matches at the 2026 World Cup.
The teenager’s biggest challenge, however, could be the expectations created by his transfer fee.
City are rebuilding their midfield following the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders. Bouaddi has been brought in partly to help fill the void left by Rodri, who joined Barcelona.
That inevitably creates comparisons with Rodri, one of the defining holding midfielders of the modern Premier League era. Fernandinho and Rodri set an exceptionally high standard in that position at City.
At just 18, Bouaddi should not be expected to replicate Rodri immediately. But when a club pays close to £86m for a teenager, patience can quickly become difficult to maintain.
For Bouaddi, the challenge will be to show that his enormous potential can translate into performances worthy of one of the biggest transfer fees in Premier League history.
Iliman Ndiaye — Everton to Manchester City, £65m
Iliman Ndiaye‘s move to Manchester City was one of the most eye-catching deals of deadline day.
The Senegal forward joined City from Everton for £65m, comprising £60m guaranteed and a further £5m in bonuses, and signed a five-year contract.
The transfer represents a significant return for Everton, who signed Ndiaye from Marseille in 2024 after his breakthrough at Sheffield United.
At 26, Ndiaye is also at a different stage of his career to Bouaddi. City are not simply buying potential; they are paying a premium for a player expected to contribute immediately.

His versatility is one of his major strengths. Ndiaye can operate across the front line and brings dribbling ability, technical quality and Premier League experience to a Manchester City side undergoing a major rebuild.

City have invested heavily in rebuilding their squad following the departures of several established players, and Ndiaye will be expected to provide goals, creativity and attacking energy.
The £65m price tag may not look excessive in the context of today’s transfer market, but Ndiaye will still need to produce consistently to convince City that the investment was justified.
Carlos Baleba — Brighton to Manchester United, £70m
Carlos Baleba has made the biggest club move of his career after Manchester United agreed a deal worth up to £70m for the Cameroon midfielder.
United paid £65m up front, with a further £5m available in add-ons, while Baleba signed a five-year contract with an option for another year.
The 22-year-old leaves Brighton after three seasons in which he developed into one of the Premier League’s highly regarded young midfielders. He made 112 appearances for the club in all competitions.
His arrival forms part of United’s extensive midfield rebuild. The club had already signed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos before bringing in Baleba.
The Cameroon international is expected to add athleticism, ball-winning ability and defensive protection to United’s midfield.
But the pressure will be significant.

United have endured several difficult seasons and are desperate to return to the Premier League’s top positions. Baleba is therefore not simply joining a big club; he is joining a team expecting an immediate improvement.
His injury, suffered during pre-season, has delayed his start, with reports suggesting he could return around mid-September.
Once fit, Baleba will have to demonstrate that he can control games at the highest level and justify the considerable investment United have made in him.
Ismael Saibari — PSV Eindhoven to Bayern Munich, €50m
Ismael Saibari‘s transfer to Bayern Munich represents a major step up for the Morocco international.
The 25-year-old joined Bayern from PSV Eindhoven for a fee reported at around €50m and signed a contract until 2031. PSV described the deal as a club-record sale.
Saibari arrives in Germany after an outstanding 2025/26 campaign. He scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in 27 Eredivisie appearances, while his performances helped PSV win the Dutch league title. He was also named Eredivisie Player of the Year.
His versatility could prove crucial at Bayern. Saibari can operate in several attacking and midfield roles, giving Vincent Kompany another option in an increasingly competitive squad.

However, Bayern Munich is a completely different environment from PSV.
At the German giants, winning is not simply the objective; it is the expectation. Saibari will have to compete for minutes against established attacking players while adapting to the demands of one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The €50m fee means Bayern will expect more than useful squad depth. Saibari will need to demonstrate that he can make a meaningful contribution when called upon.
His versatility may help him earn opportunities, but turning those opportunities into consistent performances will be the real test.
Yan Diomande — RB Leipzig to Real Madrid, €140m
Yan Diomande carries arguably the biggest pressure of all five players on this list.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig in a deal worth €125m guaranteed, with a further €15m in potential add-ons, taking the possible total to €140m. The seven-year contract runs until 2033.
The size of the transfer fee alone has created enormous expectations.
Diomande impressed during his time in Germany and arrived in Madrid with a reputation as one of the most exciting young attacking players in Europe. But Real Madrid is a different level of scrutiny.
And the early weeks of his career at the Santiago Bernabéu have highlighted the challenge.

After three La Liga matches, Diomande had made three substitute appearances and played 57 minutes without scoring or providing an assist.
That should not, of course, be interpreted as evidence that the transfer has failed. The season is still in its infancy and Diomande is only 19.
But his competition for places is formidable. Real Madrid’s attack contains established stars such as Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé, while Brahim Díaz is another option in the attacking positions.
For a player who cost a potential €140m, however, there will be constant scrutiny.
Diomande’s biggest challenge will be balancing the enormous expectations surrounding his transfer with the patience required to develop at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
If he settles quickly and begins producing goals and assists, the fee could eventually look like an investment in a future superstar. If opportunities remain limited, questions about whether Real Madrid paid too much will inevitably grow louder.
For now, Diomande has time on his side. But with a €140m price tag, patience in Madrid may come with limits.
