Spanish La Liga outfit Rayo Vallecano have opened talks with Ghanaian international Abdul Mumin Suleman over a new contract, as they look to fend off interest from potential suitors, exclusive sources have disclosed to Footy-Africa.

At the end of the current season, the central defender will have one year remaining on his contract, and the club has moved to offer him a three-year extension that would keep him at the Estadio de Vallecas until at least June 2029.

A highly placed source at HC, Mumin’s representatives, revealed that the club has proposed improved terms, viewing him as a key figure in the squad under manager Iñigo Pérez heading into next season.

“They (Rayo Vallecano) want to extend his contract early, before he enters the final year, by an additional three years. He’ll be in his final year next season and would be eligible to negotiate with other clubs, so they want to avoid that situation. He’s seen as one of the most important players at the club, and they want to build the defense around him,” the source told Footy-Africa in an exclusive interview.

The 26-year-old has been out of action since March 1st, when he was withdrawn in the 35th minute against Sevilla due to injury. Despite that, he has still made 25 appearances this season across La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Since joining Rayo Vallecano at the start of the 2022/23 season, Mumin—whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €5 million—has made 64 appearances in all competitions. He joined from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães, where he spent three seasons. He also previously played for FC Nordsjælland in the Danish top flight.

Despite receiving his first call-up to the Ghana senior national team, the Black Stars, in 2022, Mumin had to wait until 2024 to earn his debut. He has since accumulated four competitive caps, featuring in both the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.
