Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen Match Preview

After narrowly missing out on an European spot, finishing just a point behind sixth-placed Mainz in the 2024/25 season, Werder Bremen have had an underwhelming start to the new season. They suffered a shock 1-0 loss to second division side Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal first round before another a 4-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in their 2025/26 Bundesliga opener.

The club replaced manager Ole Werner with Horst Steffen in the summer and will need a massive result against 2024 Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 2 to kickstart their campaign.

Bayer Leverkusen, on the other hand, began their 2025/26 league season in disappointing fashion following a 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim. Despite taking an early lead through Jarell Quansah, they conceded twice to lose the match and must now bounce back with a result in their second league match.

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag joined the club in the summer as a replacement for 2024 Bundesliga-winning manager Xabi Alonso, who departed to join Real Madrid. Key players including Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong also left the club to join Premier League champions Liverpool.

Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen Head-to-Head Record

  • 08.03.2025 – Bayer Leverkusen 0-2 Werder Bremen
  • 26.10.2024 – Werder Bremen 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen
  • 14.04.2024 – Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 Werder Bremen
  • 25.11.2023 – Werder Bremen 0-3 Bayer Leverkusen
  • 12.03.2023 – Werder Bremen 2-3 Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen have been the better side in recent meetings between both sides, with three wins in the last five matches. Werder Bremen have only won once in the last 10 matches against Leverkusen and have not won any of the last six at home.

Recent Form: Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen are winless in their last seven matches in all competitions, losing the last six. They have also lost back-to-back matches this season under their new manager.

However, Die Werderaner were on an eight-match unbeaten run in the league before the 4-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, and have only lost one of their last five home matches in the league.

Recent Form: Bayer Leverkusen

Die Werkself have been inconsistent in recent outings, with four wins in their last 10 matches in all competitions. Their defense has also struggled, with only three clean sheets recorded in the last 10 matches.

They have also won two and drawn three of their last five away matches in the league, and have only failed to score once in their last eight away Bundesliga matches.

Player to Watch: Victor Boniface

The Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is set to return to action with Bayer Leverkusen after a failed move to Italian side AC Milan.

The 24-year-old speed and technique makes him a threat to any defense, and he will be eager to regain his spot in the team with an inspiring performance against Werder Bremen.
