English Football League (EFL) side Blackburn Rovers FC have reignited their pursuit of Nigerian winger Aniekeme Okon, Footy-Africa sources have exclusively learned.
The English club had opened discussions with Rivers United during the summer transfer window, but talks stalled before a deal could be finalized. However, Blackburn have now returned to the table and are keen on wrapping up a deal for the 26-year-old in January.
A source close to Rivers United confirmed to Footy-Africa that negotiations have resumed this week, with the Nigerian side open to a sale as Okon’s current contract expires in June 2026.
“Blackburn reopened talks this week for Aniekeme (Okon). Rivers are now ready to sanction the move in January because they don’t want to risk losing him for free later. Aniekeme himself is eager to make the switch to Europe,” the source revealed exclusively to Footy-Africa.
Okon, a dynamic winger known for his work rate, featured in 31 games for Rivers United in the 2024/25 NPFL campaign, scoring five goals and providing six assists. The previous season with Remo Stars, he notched three goals and seven assists in 25 appearances. This campaign, he has already scored one goal in his four outings for the club.
Earlier in his career, the Nigerian forward turned out for Akwa United and Kano Pillars, where he registered 10 and six goals respectively.
On the international stage, Okon has represented Nigeria across youth levels, U18, U20, and U23, and is part of the current CHAN squad. However, he is still awaiting a debut for the Super Eagles senior team.
