The FIFA World Cup stands as football’s most prestigious tournament, with every player dreaming of representing their countries at the tournament. Over the years, the continent of Africa has produced exceptional talents that have shone on the big stages and delivered iconic moments while representing their nations.
Cameroonian legends Samuel Eto’o and Rigobert Song hold the record for the most FIFA World Cup appearances by an African player (four tournaments), but are they also the ones with the most matches played?
This article takes a look at the five African footballers who have featured in the highest number of matches at the FIFA World Cup;
Francois Omam-Biyik (11 appearances)
Cameroon legend Francois Omam-Biyik has played the most FIFA World Cup games by an African player with his 11 appearances coming from three tournaments.
The former Indomitable Lions captain made his debut at the 1990 edition held in Italy and made five appearances in Cameroon’s fairytale run to the quarterfinals.
He also made three appearances at the 1994 tournament and captained the side to the 1998 World Cup in France, where he also played three times as they failed to make it out of the group.
Andre Ayew (10 appearances)
Closely following the great Cameroonian, Andre Ayew has played 10 times at the FIFA World Cup, ranking him as the second name on this list.
The Ghana captain played four times at the 2010 edition, but missed the Black Stars’ defeat to Uruguay in the quarterfinals due to yellow card accumulation.
Ayew featured three times each at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and could set a new record as the African player with the most World Cup appearances if he takes part in the 2026 edition, with Ghana one of the qualified teams.
