Kenyan international and vastly experienced defender Brian Onyango is set to depart South African top-flight side Stellenbosch FC when his contract expires at the end of June, exclusive sources have disclosed to Footy-Africa.

Onyango will leave the club after struggling to secure a starting berth during the recently concluded season, making just eight appearances across all competitions. The 30-year-old has opted to move on as he seeks greener pastures ahead of next season.

A source at VHL, who represent Onyango, told Footy-Africa exclusively that the player will walk away from Stellenbosch. It should be recalled that he only joined the club at the start of the 2024/25 season on a one-year deal and has decided against renewing it.

“It’s over between Brian (Onyango) and Stellenbosch, as he wants a place where he will play regularly. There were never any talks of a new contract, as both parties are happy with the status quo. The past two years (including his final season at Mamelodi Sundowns) have been frustrating for Brian, and he now wants to settle and work on getting back to his best,” the source exclusively said.

Before joining Stellenbosch, Onyango spent four seasons with Mamelodi Sundowns, making 61 appearances in all competitions. In his final campaign there, he featured in just three PSL games, two CAF Champions League matches, one African Football League game, and three domestic cup matches.

He had previously played for Maritzburg United and Engen Santos in South Africa, enjoying five and three seasons respectively. However, it was at Mamelodi Sundowns where he achieved the greatest success in terms of silverware, winning three PSL titles, a Nedbank Cup, and the African Football League trophy.

Internationally, Onyango is one of the most experienced players in the Kenyan national team, the Harambee Stars. Since making his debut in 2011, he has earned 47 caps and has featured in several Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualification matches.
