Former Ghana international Prince Tagoe in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa stated he is confident African nations can make a major impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the confirmation of the group-stage draw on Friday.

Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, the ex-Black Stars forward backed the continent’s representatives to rise to the challenge next summer in North America.

β€œAfrican teams are getting better every year. This is our time to show that we belong at the top level,” Tagoe said. β€œThe groups are not easy, but I see opportunities for many of the teams to go far.”

Africa will have nine teams at the tournament, with the potential for a 10th should DR Congo qualify through the inter-confederation playoff. Several sides have been handed high-profile match-ups, including Morocco, who will face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti in Group C.

β€œMorocco have shown they can handle the big nations. We all saw what they did in Qatar,” Tagoe noted. β€œThey are confident and organised, so they will believe they can beat anyone.”

Senegal and Egypt headline two other groups featuring European powerhouses. Senegal will take on former world champions France and Norway in Group I, while Egypt meet Belgium, Iran and New Zealand in Group G.

β€œSenegal always play with heart. They can surprise many people again,” Tagoe said. β€œEgypt must be at their best, but they have the experience and big players.”

Tagoe, who featured for Black Stars at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, also believes Ghana can take strength from their tough Group L assignment against England, Croatia and Panama.

β€œWe have difficult games, but Ghana can do well if we start strong. The key is winning the first match. If we beat Panama, the confidence will grow,” he said.

With the expanded format allowing three teams from each group to reach the Round of 32, Tagoe says the continent has a real chance to deliver its best performance yet.

β€œI believe at least four or five African teams can reach the knockout stage. If we stay focused and united, Africa will have a great World Cup,” he added.

The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
