Former Nigeria defender Ifeanyi Udeze in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has backed Victor Osimhen to end his Africa Cup of Nations goal drought when the Super Eagles face Tunisia on Saturday.

Osimhen drew a blank in Nigeria’s opening win over Tanzania, missing several clear-cut chances, and his struggles in front of goal at the tournament continued.

The Galatasaray forward has now scored just once in nine AFCON appearances across three editions.

However, Udeze believes the goals will come.

“He didn’t score against Tanzania, but the goals will come,” Udeze exclusively told Footy-Africa. “For me, it’s not a problem. He just needs to keep his cool and the goals will follow. He’s a very good player and a natural goal machine.”

Udeze said Osimhen was visibly frustrated after failing to find the net in the opener but expects him to respond against Tunisia.

“He was frustrated and angry that he didn’t score against Tanzania, but hopefully he scores against Tunisia and the goals start flowing,” he added.

Nigeria and Tunisia meet in a top-of-the-table Group encounter at the 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès. Both sides won their opening matches, with Tunisia beating Uganda, and victory on Saturday would secure early qualification for the round of 16.

Udeze is anticipating a tight contest.

“The game is going to be tough and an exciting contest for the neutrals,” he said. “Tunisia also have a great side, and we have a strong team as well. If we don’t win, the Super Eagles should at least get a draw because they can’t afford to lose the game. I hope the Super Eagles win, although it won’t be easy for either side,” he concluded.

Nigeria and Tunisia have met 21 times over the past 64 years, with both teams recording six wins apiece and nine matches ending in draws, some of which were decided by penalty shootouts.
