Samuel Eto’o has added his powerful voice to the growing chorus hailing Sadio Mané’s claim to another African Footballer of the Year crown, following the Senegalese star’s defining role in a turbulent yet historic AFCON final.
Now President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Eto’o watched as Mané once again etched his name into African football folklore, spearheading Senegal’s march to a second Africa Cup of Nations title after a dramatic extra-time victory over hosts and favourites Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
AFCON 2025 Final: Sixteen minutes that overshadowed Senegal’s triumph
While the scoreboard will forever credit Pape Gueye’s extra-time strike as the winning moment, coming after Brahim Diaz’s audacious panenka was repelled, the final will be remembered just as much for Mané’s authority away from the ball. As tempers flared following a controversial late penalty decision in Morocco’s favour, Senegalese players threatened to abandon the match altogether. With chaos looming and sanctions a real possibility, Mané stepped in.
The Al Nassr forward calmed his enraged teammates and personally convinced them to return to the pitch after an 18-minute standoff, restoring order and allowing the final to reach its conclusion.
Speaking to FRANCE24, Eto’o, himself a former African Player of the Year and AFCON winner, reserved special praise for Mané’s composure and moral authority in a moment that could have spiraled out of control.
“Sadio Mané not only contributed to winning the tournament but also to saving the image of the national team, because leaving the pitch would have had very serious consequences for Senegal,” he said.
Eto’o went further, framing Mané’s intervention as emblematic of greatness beyond statistics and silverware.
“Sadio is one of the greatest heroes of our continent, and I send him special respect for his morals and leadership qualities. I am honoured to consider him a friend, and his role in leading his teammates to victory was exceptional. I hope he achieves another African Footballer Of The Year because what he did, especially his behavior yesterday, is the act of a great leader,” Eto’o concluded.
Senegal stun hosts Morocco to win AFCON after final of extraordinary chaos
The triumph places Mané in an exclusive circle of African icons to have lifted the AFCON trophy twice, reinforcing his legacy not merely as a match-winner, but as a statesman of the game.
In a final defined by controversy, tension and raw emotion, Mané’s calm authority proved just as decisive as the winning goal, perhaps even more so.
