Ugandan teenage midfielder Abubakali Walusimbi has made a major career leap after Danish giants FC Copenhagen hijacked his proposed move to Czech powerhouse Slavia Prague, with the highly rated youngster now completing his switch to the Danish club.
Footy-Africa can exclusively reveal that the 17-year-old has signed a three-year deal with Copenhagen and has already joined the club’s training programme as he begins life in European football.
Walusimbi had been on course to join Slavia Prague after the Czech giants identified him as a long-term prospect. However, Copenhagen moved decisively to beat their European counterparts to his signature, securing the services of one of Uganda’s most promising young midfielders.
The youngster is a product of Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC, having risen through the club’s youth ranks before breaking into the senior setup.
Despite his tender age, Walusimbi has already amassed an enviable collection of honours, having been part of Vipers teams that won two Uganda Premier League titles and one Uganda Cup.
His development at club level was complemented by a rapid rise through Uganda’s national youth teams. He represented the U15s before becoming an important figure in the Cubs setup.
Walusimbi was part of the Uganda U17 team that made history by qualifying for the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar, marking the country’s maiden appearance at the global tournament. FUFA included him in the final 21-man squad, while also identifying him among the team’s leadership group, with the midfielder serving as one of the vice-captains.
His growing reputation had already attracted continental recognition before the World Cup. CAF named Walusimbi the best player of the 2024 CECAFA U17 Championship, praising his technical ability, vision and creative influence in Uganda’s midfield.
He carried that reputation onto the global stage in Qatar, where he contributed a goal and an assist and ranked among Uganda’s leading performers for duels won.
Footy-Africa first reported in September 2025 that Walusimbi was in the Czech Republic finalising a move to Slavia Prague, with the club initially planning to develop him within its youth structure before eventually integrating him into the senior setup.
That move has now been overtaken by Copenhagen, who have won the race for his signature and immediately brought him into their training environment.
The three-year agreement represents another significant milestone in the career of a player who is still only 17.

From the Vipers academy to Uganda’s junior national teams, the U17 World Cup and now European football, Walusimbi’s rise has been remarkably swift.
His immediate focus will be on adapting to Copenhagen’s footballing environment and continuing his development, but his arrival places him within the structure of one of Scandinavia’s most prominent clubs.
For Ugandan football, Walusimbi’s move is another important success story for the country’s youth development pathway and could mark the beginning of an exciting European adventure for the Vipers academy graduate.
