Gambian midfielder Abubakr Barry could be set for a major step in his career as Austrian giants RB Salzburg are now closing in on an agreement with fellow Bundesliga side FK Austria Wien for his transfer, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
Negotiations between both clubs are understood to be progressing well, with Salzburg’s opening offer believed to be between €3 million and €4 million.
The Austrian champions are now favourites to secure the signature of the 25-year-old ahead of several English Championship clubs that had shown strong interest.
Among the clubs monitoring Barry’s situation were Stoke City and Oxford United, with Oxford reportedly seeing a €2 million proposal turned down earlier in the process.
Stoke City submit €3 million bid for Gambian midfielder Abubakr Barry
Barry has continued to attract attention following his impressive performances in Austria, establishing himself as one of the standout midfielders in the league. His consistency, composure in possession, and defensive work rate have made him a valuable asset for Austria Wien over the past seasons.
The Scorpions midfielder remains contracted to Austria Wien until June 2027, while his current market valuation stands at around €2.5 million.
However, Salzburg’s willingness to exceed that figure highlights the club’s determination to add the Gambian international to their squad ahead of the new campaign.
