Egypt and Angola conclude their Group B campaigns this Monday in Agadir, with the Pharaohs looking to maintain their perfect record while the Palancas Negras fight for a “Miracle on the Coast” to keep their tournament hopes alive.

After two gritty wins secured by Mohamed Salah, Egypt have already booked their place in the Round of 16. Angola, conversely, sit at the bottom of the group with just one point, knowing only a historic first-ever victory over the record seven-time champions will give them any hope of progressing as a best third-placed team.

Team news

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan faces a selection dilemma. While he is expected to rest several key players to manage fatigue ahead of the knockouts, Mohamed Salahโ€”who has scored the winner in both games so farโ€”may still feature as he chases the Golden Boot. The Pharaohs will be without defender Mohamed Hany, who is suspended after a red card against South Africa. Emam Ashour is expected to return to the starting XI to provide creative spark in midfield.

Angola’s Patrice Beaumelle is desperate for offensive efficiency. Gelson Dala, who scored in the 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe, will lead the line, but the team will deeply miss the creativity of Zini, who remains sidelined with injury. Veteran goalkeeper Hugo Marques is tipped to retain his spot between the posts after a string of impressive saves kept Angola in the hunt during the opening rounds.

Hill to climb

For Angola, the statistical mountain could not be steeper. Not only is this a “must-win” match, but it is a battle against decades of dominance:

  • Clean sweep: Egypt are unbeaten in their previous seven meetings against Angola. In an AFCON setting, the Pharaohs have won both prior encounters by a 2-1 margin.
  • “Deadly” Salah: Mohamed Salah has been the decisive factor in this tournament, scoring the winning goal in both Group B matches so far (a 91st-minute strike against Zimbabwe and a first-half penalty against South Africa).
  • Goal drought: Angola have struggled to convert dominance into points; they have managed only two goals from 24 shots across their first two matches.

Hossam Hassan, despite having already qualified, remains focused:

“We have a responsibility to our fans and the shirt. We have secured the next round, but we want to finish with nine points. There are no ‘friendly’ matches in a tournament like AFCON, and we respect Angolaโ€™s fight for survival.”
