Former Nigeria striker Benedict Akwuegbu in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa expressed belief that the Super Eagles have the quality to win the current Africa Cup of Nations, as they begin their Group C campaign on Tuesday.

Nigeria, three-time continental champions, are seeking a fourth AFCON title after finishing runners-up at the last tournament, losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final. The Super Eagles previously lifted the trophy in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, Akwuegbu said confidence and support will be key to Nigeria’s chances.

“I’m optimistic that the team will excel; we just need to keep hope alive.” Akwuegbu told Footy-Africa. “We must continue to support the NFF and the entire team. We have the players and the quality needed to win the tournament.”

AFCON winner Ogenyi Onazi warns Super Eagles against tricky Taifa Stars

Nigeria open their Group C campaign against Tanzania at the Complex Sportif de Fes, with the Taifa Stars determined to limit the influence of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamond revealed his side have prepared specific plans to deal with Nigeria’s attacking threats.

“We have a for sure tactical plan to try to neutralize Victor Osimhen, but it’s not only him you have a player like Chukwueze, like Lookman like if one is the neutralize the other is attacking,” he said.

Reacting to those comments, Akwuegbu warned that Nigeria must avoid over-reliance on Osimhen and called on head coach Eric Chelle to develop alternative attacking options.

“My only advice to the coach is to adopt more varied tactics and a different style of play.” Akwuegbu added “The team currently relies too heavily on Osimhen, and whenever he doesn’t play or score, the team tends to struggle. Many countries are now familiar with our approach and will focus on marking Osimhen and Lookman out of the game.

“It’s important for the coach to develop a system in which goals can come from any player and where there are multiple match winners, as this is an area the team currently lacks,” Akwuegbu concluded.

After facing Tanzania on Tuesday, Nigeria will meet Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on 27 December before concluding the group stage against Uganda’s Cranes on 30 December.
