English-born Ugandan attacking midfielder Divine Mukasa is once again on the radar of 2023/24 German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Footy-Africa has exclusively learned.
The 18-year-old, who signed his first professional contract with Manchester City in August last year, had previously attracted strong interest from Leverkusen. The German giants had considered luring him with the promise of immediate first-team opportunities, but a potential move was called off after City declined to entertain proposals.
Now, however, Leverkusen are back in pursuit, targeting a transfer in the January transfer window. Sources close to Mukasa’s camp confirm that the Kasper Huljmand-led side has reignited talks as they continue to view the youngster as a long-term successor to star midfielder Florian Wirtz, who joined Liverpool.
“Bayer Leverkusen were serious and made contact before, but City held firm. They’ve come back again, and while we respect Manchester City, the opportunity of first-team football in Germany is something we can’t ignore,” a source close to the player’s agency, After Sports Consultancy, exclusively revealed to Footy-Africa.

Mukasa was outstanding for City’s youth level sides last season, recording 21 goals and 17 assists in 44 appearances across the U18, U19 and U21 teams. Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax also continue keeping close tabs on his progress.
Earlier this year, Pep Guardiola publicly praised Mukasa’s development, hinting that the teenager could be in line for a senior call-up before the end of the current campaign.
With Leverkusen renewing their push, the coming months could prove decisive in shaping the next step of one of England’s brightest young talents.
