Nigeria defender Ibrahim Buhari is set to remain at IF Elfsborg until the end of the season despite attracting interest from clubs within Sweden and abroad, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.

The 23-year-old centre-back, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest young defensive prospects in Europe, is currently under contract with the Swedish top-flight side until June 2026.

This situation had sparked speculation about a potential early move, as he would soon be eligible to negotiate with other clubs once he enters the final six months of his deal.

However, Buhari has moved to clarify his immediate future, confirming that he is fully committed to Elfsborg for the start of the new campaign while discussions about his long-term future continue behind the scenes.

Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, the composed defender dismissed rumours suggesting he could be on his way out of the club in the near future.

“Yes, it is true my contract expires at the end of the summer, but I will remain here until then. There has been a bit of talk about potential moves within Scandinavia and also Major League Soccer in America, which were options for me,” he noted.

“For now, my main focus is on my club. I believe I still have a lot to give to the team, and they have also given me a lot in return. That is the situation at the moment. My focus is on performing well for the club, and then in the summer, I can provide more clarity about my next move,” he concluded.

The new Allsvenskan season is set to kick off on April 4, with Elfsborg scheduled to begin their campaign at home against IFK Göteborg on April 6.
