Denis Onyango will fly Uganda’s flag alone in the knockout rounds of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after Mamelodi Sundowns sealed progression on a decisive final matchday.

The South African giants delivered when it mattered most, dispatching MC Alger 2-0 to cement a quarter-final berth. A clinical brace from Brazilian forward Brian Leon Muniz proved enough to secure second place in Group C and keep the Brazilians’ continental dream alive.

Former champions Sundowns, who lifted the title in 2016, advanced behind Sudan’s Al Hilal Omdurman. Al Hilal edged Stade Éloi Lupopo 1-0 in Kigali to top the group and underline their consistency across the campaign.

While Onyango celebrates another deep run in Africa’s elite club competition, the script was far crueller for compatriot Allan Okello.

Okello’s Young Africans S.C. signed off in style with a thumping 3-0 victory over Algeria’s JS Kabylie at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar. The Ugandan midfielder supplied the assist for the second goal as Angolan striker Depu struck twice before Boka added gloss to an emphatic display.

Despite the commanding win, Yanga’s fate was sealed elsewhere. Morocco’s AS FAR battled to a goalless draw against record champions Al Ahly in Cairo, a result that lifted FAR Rabat a single point above the Tanzanian side. Al Ahly progressed as group winners, while Yanga were left agonisingly short.

It marks another painful continental exit for Young Africans, who miss out on the quarter-finals for the second straight season.

Their domestic rivals Simba SC also endured a disappointing campaign, finishing bottom of their group despite a final-day victory.
