Ghanaian forward Caleb Ekuban is edging closer to extending his stay at Italian side Genoa, with the club opening discussions over a contract renewal, Footy-Africa can exclusively reveal.

The 31-year-old’s current deal runs until June 2026, but Genoa are keen to secure his future well in advance as they continue to build stability around a core group of experienced players. Ekuban joined the Rossoblù in 2021 from Turkish giants Trabzonspor and has since become an important figure both on and off the pitch.

Across five seasons, he has made 108 league appearances, scoring 10 goals and contributing several key assists, while offering tactical flexibility across the frontline. Beyond the numbers, Ekuban’s work rate, pressing ability and leadership have made him a trusted option for successive managers.

He played a particularly crucial role during Genoa’s 2022/23 Serie B campaign, helping the club secure promotion back to Serie A at the first attempt. His experience and consistency during that transitional period further strengthened his standing within the squad.

Sources have indicated that Genoa value not only his performances but also his professionalism and availability, factors that have prompted the early renewal discussions. The club see him as a stabilising presence as they aim to consolidate their status in Italy’s top flight.

Ekuban, for his part, is understood to be open to continuing his journey at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Having settled comfortably in Italy with his family, the former Ghana international is pleased with the club’s desire to keep him and is optimistic about finding common ground in negotiations.

However, should talks fail to produce an agreement, Ekuban is expected to explore alternative options. A return to Turkey remains a possible destination, given his successful spell at Trabzonspor, where he won domestic silverware and built a strong reputation.

For now, though, the signs point toward continuity, with both player and club aligned in their desire to extend a partnership that has quietly grown in importance over the past five years.
