Cape Verde’s historic journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Friday after the tournament debutants were edged 3-2 by defending champions Argentina following an enthralling extra-time contest in the Round of 32.

Despite the defeat, the Blue Sharks enhanced their growing reputation on the global stage, matching one of football’s biggest powers for long periods and refusing to back down in a performance filled with courage, determination and quality.

Argentina eventually booked their place in the Round of 16, but they were forced to work relentlessly for victory as Cape Verde repeatedly fought back, inspired by another exceptional display from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.

The experienced shot-stopper was once again the backbone of his side, producing a string of remarkable saves to frustrate Lionel Messi and the Argentine attack throughout an unforgettable encounter.

Messi had an early opportunity from a free kick, but Vozinha reacted brilliantly in the 18th minute to deny the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Argentina finally found the breakthrough just before the half-hour mark. Lisandro Martinez delivered an exquisite lofted pass into the penalty area, where Messi timed his run perfectly before firing emphatically into the roof of the net to hand the South Americans a deserved lead.

Cape Verde refused to let the setback derail their ambitions and continued to threaten whenever opportunities arose. Before halftime, Vozinha produced another outstanding save, diving low to tip Enzo Fernandez’s powerful effort away from the bottom corner and keep the deficit at a single goal.

The African nation emerged from the interval with renewed confidence and nearly levelled through Deroy Duarte, whose effort from outside the area forced Emiliano Martinez into a sharp save.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 59th minute. Ryan Mendes calmly picked out Duarte inside the box, and the midfielder showed great composure before drilling his finish into the bottom corner to bring Cape Verde deservedly back on level terms.

Argentina increased the pressure as the match entered its closing stages, but Vozinha continued to frustrate them. He denied Messi from close range in the 63rd minute, kept out another dangerous free kick in the 72nd minute, and produced yet another crucial stop deep into stoppage time to send the contest into extra time.

The world champions regained the advantage almost immediately after the restart. Following a corner, Alexis Mac Allister nodded the ball into the danger area, allowing Lisandro Martinez to finish from close range in the 92nd minute.

Cape Verde responded once again in spectacular fashion.

Sidny Lopes Cabral collected the ball outside the box in the 103rd minute before unleashing a thunderous strike that flew into the top corner, stunning Argentina and restoring parity at 2-2.

Messi continued to orchestrate Argentina’s attacks and came close to putting his side ahead moments before the second period of extra time, but Vozinha comfortably dealt with his one-on-one effort.

With penalties looming, Argentina finally found the decisive moment.

Messi’s perfectly delivered corner in the 111th minute was met by Cristian Romero, who rose highest inside the penalty area to power a header beyond Vozinha and secure a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Although their World Cup adventure ended in defeat, Cape Verde depart the tournament with enormous credit after exceeding expectations on their maiden appearance. Their fearless displays, resilience against elite opposition and memorable performances have established the Blue Sharks as one of the standout stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
