Romanian top-flight side CFR Cluj have reached an agreement to sign Nigerian international Kenneth Omeruo on a two-year contract, following hours of intense negotiations, Footy-Africa has exclusively learned.

While CFR Cluj’s glaring interest has stood for over a week, formal contact was made on Thursday. While the massively experienced defender preferred a three-year contract, the team tabled two years before the parties eventually reached a verbal agreement.

The move was further fueled and accelerated due to Omeruo’s desire to get active at the top level again, and the chance to feature in European football. CFR Cluj is set to form part of the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League campaign.

A source at ISC, who are Omeruo’s representatives, confirmed that the two-year move is set to be official by the club. “It wasn’t hard to happen despite the formalities coming on short notice. The agreement is a two-year contract even when the player wanted three years for more certainty. Unveiling is now a matter of when rather than if,” the source exclusively told Footy-Africa.

His most recent active spell was at Kasımpaşa in Turkey six months back. The 31-year-old, whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €1.20 million, made five appearances for the side before exiting. He has also previously played for Alanyaspor in Turkey, Leganés in Spain, Chelsea U21 and Middlesbrough in England, as well as ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands.

Internationally, Omeruo made his debut for Nigeria at just 19, won the Africa Cup of Nations at 20, and has featured in several major tournaments including the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON. Overall, he has made 69 caps in the coveted shirt. He remains one of Nigeria’s most experienced active players.
