Former Nigeria international Duke Udi in an exclusive interview told Footy-Africa that AIK youngster Zadok Yohanna has shown enough quality to merit consideration for the Super Eagles, but has urged caution over placing too much pressure on the 18-year-old.

Yohanna has made an impressive start to life in Sweden, taking the Allsvenskan by storm since joining AIK in July. The winger has scored five goals and registered three assists in 11 appearances, attracting reported interest from clubs including Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen.

With Nigeria set to compete in a four-nation tournament in London later this month, followed by high-profile friendlies against Portugal and Poland in June, Yohanna is among the emerging talents being discussed for a potential call-up under head coach Eric Chelle.

AIK to make summer decision on highly-rated Nigerian star Zadok Yohanna

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Udi insisted national team selection should be based purely on merit.

“Every Nigerian playing in Europe or anywhere across the globe should be considered for the national team, provided they are qualified and good enough,” he said.

“Selection for the Super Eagles must be based on merit, regardless of origin or background. If a player is performing consistently for his club week in and week out, like Zadok is doing, and the coach believes he can improve the squad, then the necessary steps should be taken to invite him.”

However, the former midfielder stressed that any inclusion must align with the coachโ€™s tactical plans.

“Ultimately, selection depends on the coachโ€™s vision. A player might be a favourite among fans and pundits, but if his style does not align with the managerโ€™s approach, it creates a different dynamic,” Udi added.

“People view football through different lenses. A player who looks world class to the public might not fit the specific requirements of the coaching staff. If he has the quality to help the team, a friendly game would be the perfect opportunity to assess what he can bring.”

AIK ‘unaware’ of Dortmund, Leverkusen & Leipzig links as clubs circle Zadok Yohanna

Udi also warned against rushing Yohannaโ€™s development:

“It is a point of pride for any Nigerian to see one of our own competing in high-level European football. He is clearly a gifted player, but it is vital that he is allowed to continue his development without unnecessary pressure. That will help him reach his full potential.”

Yohanna, meanwhile, says he remains hopeful of receiving a call-up but acknowledges that any decision will depend on his club, given the Swedish season runs until late July.

“Itโ€™s not official yet. Iโ€™ve not had any contact from the NFF, but I hope they call me,” he said. “Itโ€™s not up to me, itโ€™s up to the club. If I get a call but AIK say I should stay, then Iโ€™ll stay โ€” no problem.”
