Express FC have strengthened their squad ahead of the new Uganda Premier League season after completing the signing of experienced left-back Shafik Batambuze on a two-year contract, Footy-Africa understands.
The seasoned defender arrives at Wankulukuku from Kenyan Premier League outfit Kakamega Homeboyz, bringing with him a wealth of experience gathered across East and Southern Africa.
Batambuze’s move marks a long-awaited return to the Uganda Premier League, ending a 13-year stint abroad during which he built an impressive career in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.
In Kenya, the attacking full-back represented several top-flight clubs, including Gor Mahia, Tusker FC, Western Stima, Muhoroni Youth and, most recently, Kakamega Homeboyz. His journey also took him to Tanzania, where he turned out for Fountain Gate, Singida Black Stars and Singida United, before enjoying a spell with Zambia’s Kabwe Warriors.
Express believe the 31-year-old’s vast experience and leadership qualities will add valuable balance to Morley Byekwaso’s squad as the club seeks to mount a stronger challenge in the forthcoming campaign.
Widely recognised for his pinpoint deliveries from wide areas, Batambuze also possesses a dangerous set-piece threat, attributes that could provide the Red Eagles with an added attacking dimension from the left flank.
His arrival forms part of an ongoing rebuilding exercise at the club, with Express expected to continue reshaping their squad before the transfer window closes. Several fresh faces are anticipated to come in as others depart, with the technical bench keen to assemble a more competitive group.
Byekwaso is understood to be targeting the right blend of seasoned professionals and emerging talent, believing that a balanced squad will give Express a stronger platform to compete consistently throughout the new Uganda Premier League season.
