Ghana’s memorable run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Saturday after a clinical Colombia side claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in their Round of 32 meeting at Kansas City Stadium.
The Black Stars entered the knockout encounter hoping to extend their impressive tournament journey, but they were ultimately undone by an early strike and a well-drilled Colombian performance that left little room for a comeback.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz reshuffled his starting lineup with two key decisions. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi returned between the posts after recovering from injury, while Derrick Luckassen kept his place in the side following his goal-scoring World Cup debut in Ghana’s previous fixture.

Colombia wasted little time imposing themselves on the contest, dictating possession and moving the ball with confidence from the opening whistle. Their bright start paid off in the 14th minute when prolific striker Luis Suarez whipped a dangerous delivery into the penalty area, allowing Jhon Arias to arrive at the perfect moment before calmly steering his finish beyond Ati-Zigi to hand Los Cafeteros the lead.
The South Americans continued to control proceedings for much of the opening half, forcing Ghana onto the back foot with their fluid attacking play.
They came within inches of doubling their advantage just before the interval as Johan Mojica rose highest to power a header towards goal, only for Ati-Zigi to produce an outstanding reflex save that kept the Black Stars within touching distance.
Ghana emerged after the break with greater urgency, but breaking down Colombia’s disciplined defensive structure proved an uphill task. The Black Stars struggled to find rhythm in the attacking third and were unable to create clear-cut opportunities, ending the contest without registering a single shot on target.
Colombia, meanwhile, remained a constant threat whenever they broke forward. Ati-Zigi once again showcased his quality in the 58th minute with a superb close-range save to deny Luis DΓaz, before producing another excellent stop later in the second half to prevent the South Americans from increasing their advantage.

Despite Ghana’s determination and resilience, Colombia managed the closing stages with composure, controlling the tempo and limiting the Black Stars to speculative attacks as they secured a deserved place in the next round.
The defeat ends Ghana’s finest World Cup campaign since 2010, with the four-time African champions taking plenty of positives from a tournament in which they successfully negotiated a challenging group before eventually falling to one of South America’s strongest sides.
For Colombia, the victory keeps their World Cup ambitions firmly alive as they advance to the Round of 16 after another assured and disciplined display.
