Ghanaian teenage midfielder Fatawu Ganiwu has taken another major step in his burgeoning career after completing a move to Ukrainian powerhouse Dynamo Kyiv.
The highly rated 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the 16-time Ukrainian Premier League champions, bringing an end to a recruitment battle involving several clubs across Europe.
Ganiwu arrives from Ghanaian Division Three outfit AS Koppan, the Accra-based development side with which he has been registered for much of his formative years. His transfer was finalised after he successfully underwent his medical examinations before completing the contractual formalities.
The move caps a remarkable period of development for a player who has already attracted attention from some of European football’s biggest academies.
Before securing his switch to Kyiv, Ganiwu had opportunities to train and trial with a number of elite clubs, including English Premier League trio Chelsea, Bournemouth and Brentford, as well as Austrian powerhouse RB Salzburg.
His experience at Chelsea proved particularly significant. The Ghanaian spent an entire month at the club’s Cobham training base, working alongside both the Under-18 and Under-21 squads and featuring in youth fixtures against renowned opposition such as Manchester United and Sheffield United.
His progression has also included valuable exposure to senior football in Ghana and abroad.
In September 2024, Ganiwu joined Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities on loan, gaining experience in the country’s top flight before subsequently spending time with French lower-league outfit US Avranches on another loan spell.
His development has been mirrored on the international stage.
Ganiwu first made a strong impression with Ghana’s U-16 setup at the UEFA Youth Championship in Serbia, where he played an influential role in the Black Starlets’ remarkable title-winning campaign. Ghana produced eye-catching victories over Serbia, Spain and Switzerland on their way to lifting the trophy.
The midfielder later progressed into the U-17 ranks before earning a place in Maxwell Konadu’s Ghana U-20 squad for the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire this summer.
Now, a new chapter awaits in the Ukrainian capital.
Dynamo Kyiv’s decision to secure Ganiwu reflects their belief in his long-term potential, with the teenager joining a club renowned for nurturing emerging talent and providing a pathway into senior football.
The timing of the move also offers an intriguing opportunity, with Dynamo Kyiv involved in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds this season.
While Ganiwu is not expected to be rushed into first-team responsibility, his arrival will place him within an environment designed to accelerate his development and gradually prepare him for the demands of elite European football.
For the Ghanaian youngster, the next challenge will be adapting to a new country, culture and footballing environment while competing for recognition at one of Eastern Europe’s most storied clubs.
After attracting scouts across England, Austria and beyond during his teenage years, Ganiwu has now secured the platform he needs to turn his considerable promise into a career at the highest level.
