Uganda’s flagship sporting venue is on the brink of a sweeping facelift after the Ministry of Education and Sports confirmed it will formalise a partnership with the Engineering Brigade Corps of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to commence extensive redevelopment works at the Mandela National Stadium.

The memorandum of understanding, set to be signed today, clears the path for a large-scale overhaul of the iconic Namboole facility, signalling a bold step in the country’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Under the proposed blueprint, the stadium’s seating capacity will be significantly increased to 64,125, transforming it into one of the region’s most formidable sporting arenas. The redevelopment is projected to run for a period of between 12 and 16 months, during which the venue will undergo structural expansion and comprehensive modernisation.

Beyond the seating upgrade, the master plan outlines the construction of 1,907 parking bays, including dedicated space to accommodate approximately 300 buses, a move designed to ease traffic flow and enhance matchday logistics.

The broader sports complex will also benefit from new additions such as a mini indoor arena, futsal courts, and a race track, creating a multi-sport hub capable of hosting diverse disciplines.

Patrice Motsepe expresses strong faith in East Africa’s readiness for AFCON 2027

The ambitious upgrade is expected to not only elevate the stadium to continental standards but also reinforce Uganda’s broader sports infrastructure. With AFCON 2027 on the horizon, the redevelopment underscores the nation’s determination to deliver a world-class tournament and leave a lasting legacy for local sport.
