Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts have completed the signing of Ugandan international forward Rogers Mato on a pre-contract agreement.
The 22-year-old will join the Tynecastle club in July on a three-year deal following the expiry of his contract with North Macedonian side Vardar.
Mato, described by Hearts as “one of Europe’s hottest properties,” has been in sensational form this season, netting 12 goals in just 13 games to fire Vardar to the top of their domestic league.
The winger also showcased his clinical edge on the international stage this month, scoring for Uganda during their Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Scouting success
Hearts have been active in the market to bolster a squad currently challenging at the top of the table, and the acquisition of Mato is seen as a significant coup.
By securing a pre-contract, the Edinburgh club have fought off competition for a player who has seen his stock rise rapidly since moving to the Balkans.

Following in Obua’s footsteps
Mato will become the second Ugandan to represent the Jambos, following in the footsteps of cult hero David Obua, who played for the club between 2008 and 2012.
The move marks another step in Mato’s ascent through European football. After starting his career at Proline FC in Kampala, he had a spell in Turkey with Sanliurfaspor before moving to North Macedonia.
During his time with Vardar, he helped the side lift the Macedonian Cup and featured in UEFA Conference League qualifying.
