Kudus edges closer to World Cup dream with Ghana awaiting Messi showdown

Mohammed Kudus may soon find himself staring across the pitch at the very man who inspired his earliest football fantasies. The Ghanaian star has long made his admiration for Lionel Messi public, famously recalling the magic that drew him to the sport.

“Which team did I like seeing growing up? Barcelona… What was it about them? Messi, easiest one,” he once explained in a 2024 interview, a quote that has since followed him everywhere.

Now, that boyhood affection could be tested on the grandest stage of all.

With Argentina placed in Pot 1 for Friday’s FIFA World Cup draw in Washington, the prospect of Ghana being grouped with the reigning world champions has quickly become one of the most captivating possibilities. And at the heart of that storyline sits Kudus, a player who has evolved from a street-football prodigy in Nima to one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking forces.

A clash between the Black Stars and La Albiceleste would be loaded with narrative weight. On one side stands Messi, still orchestrating Argentina’s rhythm with effortless genius and unmatched experience. On the other is Kudus, whose game thrives on directness, electricity, and fearless creativity, a player who turns tight spaces into playgrounds and defenders into bystanders.

Such a meeting wouldn’t just be about football; it would be symbolic. It would tell a story of aspiration turning into reality, of a young Ghanaian who once watched Messi on a television screen now daring to challenge him under the lights of the world’s biggest tournament.

For Ghanaian supporters, the idea brings echoes of past World Cup battles against giants of the game. For the Black Stars themselves, it would be an early test of ambition and progress as they prepare to reassert their place on the global scene.

The draw will reveal all on Friday. But for Kudus, the mere possibility is already momentous. The hero he admired as a child could soon become the opponent he must outplay, a stunning twist in a journey that continues to rise.
