Newport County AFC announced the loan signing of Ghanaian forward Nathan Opoku from Leicester City until 31 December 2025, according to the official announcement.

The Ghanaian-born 24-year-old attacker is an exciting prospect with a prolific collegiate record and further experience in the Belgian Pro League. Opoku impressed in the United States with 19 goals in 19 matches at Lindsey Wilson College before transferring to Syracuse University. There, he continued his form, scoring 11 goals and providing 8 assists across 25 games, helping Syracuse to the NCAA Division National Championship.

“I’m really excited about this new challenge and to get back on the grass. I’m feeling ready and I really want to contribute to the clubs ambitions. I hope that my experience playing in Belgium will help the club and I can’t wait to get started,” Opoku said.

Leicester City manager David Hughes, meanwhile, also expressed delight with adding Opoku to his squad.

“He brings us more options to our forward line, and he comes with great experience despite only being 24. He’s shown excellence at collegiate level and adaptability in Europe. This loan gives him an opportunity to shine while adding spark to our forward line,” he noted.

In January 2023, Leicester City signed Opoku from Syracuse, and sent him on loan to their Belgian sister club, OH Leuven. He spent the 2023–24 season with Leuven, featuring regularly in the Jupiler Pro League and gaining valuable first-team experience.
