Lille OSC have entered the market for AS Monaco’s teenage forward George Ilenikhena as they scramble to find a replacement for top scorer Hamza Igamane, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The pursuit of the 19-year-old Nigerian, first reported by RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins, comes at a time of crisis for the northern club.

  • The Verdict

Lille have suffered five consecutive defeats across all competitions and are currently operating with 39-year-old Olivier Giroud as their only fit senior center-forward.

Igamane void

The urgency for a new signing follows a devastating blow at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hamza Igamane suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the final in Rabat, where his Morocco side fell to Senegal.

The striker underwent successful surgery in Lyon yesterday, but the 6-to-9-month recovery period leaves Lille’s European aspirations in jeopardy.

€25m stumbling block

While Ilenikhena’s profile—quick, powerful, and already proven in Ligue 1—appeals to Lille boss Bruno Génésio, the finances of the deal remain complex.

  • Asking price: Monaco are reportedly demanding €25m to sanction a permanent move, aiming to turn a profit on the €18m they paid Royal Antwerp in 2024.

  • Financial pressure: Monaco are under pressure to sell a high-value asset before July to satisfy UEFA’s financial sustainability regulations, making them reluctant to accept a simple loan without an obligation to buy.

  • Stats: Despite making 20 appearances this term, Ilenikhena has struggled for consistent starts under Sébastien Pocognoli, netting four goals across all competitions.

Lille’s shortlist: Plan B and C

With the transfer deadline looming on January 31, Lille are keeping their options open after failing to land Neal Maupay earlier this month.

The Verdict

Lille’s board are reportedly hesitant to meet the €25m valuation for a player currently valued at €12m by Transfermarkt.

However, with the club in freefall and a critical Europa League knockout tie on the horizon, the last-minute loan mentioned by insiders may be the only way to bridge the gap between Monaco’s demands and Lille’s budget.
