In a significant move, Mahmudu Bajo, the talented Gambian midfielder, has officially signed for FK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) in a transfer worth €3 million, plus performance-related bonuses, from DAC 1904.
The player’s agent, Modou Beyai, who is also a Gambian, explained that while several clubs had expressed interest in Bajo, the 20-year-old almost signed a deal with Besiktas (Turkey).
“When we had Besiktas agreed and all terms finalised, there was nothing left but to fly and of course, on our way there, we were told to hang on and from that minute I knew something was wrong but Bajo remained calm and focused and knew his time would come. Time went by, and a lot of clubs from around Europe inquired about his services. The closest and most serious were Stoke City, Portland Timbers, Rangers, and Ahmat Grozny. But Red Star, who had been ready to finalise the transfer for over a month, continued to push and convinced us of their project,” Beyai exclusively told Footy-Africa.
“They showed commitment and willingness to want him for their UEFA Champions League squad and gave him the platform for his next steps of development,” Beyai explained. “I will say it is a good move for him. Moving to the Serbian league guarantees him to compete every season in Europe, with a view to a move to the top five leagues.”
Bajo has inked a four-year contract with the Serbian football giants, which includes an option for an additional year. Bajo will continue to wear his familiar number 6 shirt as he embarks on this new chapter of his career.
Modou Beyai also spoke highly of Bajo’s work ethic and potential, praising his client for his constant improvement and commitment to his development. “He is a player who continues to be better every day,” Beyai commented. “In my opinion, he is doing all the right things that are needed of a young Gambian player.”
Bajo’s signing is a testament to his hard work and potential. From his beginnings at Podbrezová to his development at DAC 1904, and now this prestigious transfer to Red Star Belgrade.
“I am delighted to see a player I just saw in 2022 making moves every year. Since the start of his professional career in 2023 with Podbrezová, to DAC 1904 in 2024, and now Red Star in 2025, it’s been an incredible journey. He’s shown that with hard work, anything is possible.”
Mahmudu Bajo’s Potential Transfer to Red Star Belgrade Faces Roadblocks Amid Complex Negotiations
This transfer marks the next step in the rapid rise of Bajo, who has impressed with his performances in recent years. His move to one of the most prestigious clubs in the Balkans signals the growing recognition of his talent in European football.
Bajo’s journey to the top has been swift and impressive. He began his professional career in 2023 with Podbrezová, a Slovakian club, where he showcased his potential. His move to DAC 1904 in 2024 was another important step in his development, where he further honed his skills, attracting attention from several top clubs across Europe.
The Gambian’s progress didn’t go unnoticed, and by 2025, he had caught the eye of several European heavyweights, including Besiktas, Stoke City, Portland Timbers, Rangers, and Ahmat Grozny. However, it was Red Star Belgrade that made the most compelling offer and convinced Bajo’s camp that they were the right fit for the midfielder’s next career move.
