The Cameroonian national team ranks among Africa’s football powerhouses, having won multiple continental titles and made several appearances on the global stage.
Although the country has produced numerous world-class talents over the years, several other players eligible through descent or dual nationality have chosen to represent other countries.
From French stars Kylian Mbappe and William Saliba to other top talents, here are five football stars that could have represented the Indomitable Lions.
Kylian Mbappe (France)
Widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world presently, Kylian Mbappe was born in France to a Cameroonian father and an Algerian mother, making him eligible to play for any of the three countries.
The 26-year-old preferred to play for the Les Bleus and has enjoyed a very successful career with the team. The Real Madrid man was an influential part of France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup triumph, while he also helped them to the final of the 2022 edition.
Mbappe was also named captain of the French national team in 2023 and is second on the all-time goalscoring chart for the national team with 53 goals.

William Saliba (France)
Arsenal defender William Saliba could have also represented Cameroon, but opted to play for France.
The 24-year-old was born in France to a Lebanese father and a Cameroonian mother, making him eligible to play for the Indomitable Lions.
Saliba has developed into one of the best defenders in world football and has become a mainstay in the French defense, with over 30 appearances for the side.

Hugo Ekitike (France)
Hugo Ekitike joins this star-studded list of players that could have represented Cameroon, as he also opted to play for his birth-country, France.
The Liverpool forward was born to a Cameroonian father and a French mother, but turned down the opportunity to play for the African country.
Ekitike represented France at both the U-20 and U-21 levels and earned a first senior call-up in August, before going on to make is debut in a World Cup qualifier in September against Ukraine.
Nketiah, Acheampong and three other stars eligible for Ghana national team
Youssoufa Moukoko (Germany)
Former Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko is the only player on the list that was born in Cameroon. The young attacker rose to prominence at an early age and was courted by both Cameroon and Germany.
He represented Germany at the youth level and made his debut for the senior side in 2022 at just 17 years and 261 days.
Moukoko still remains eligible to play for the Cameroon national team, as he is yet to play three competitive matches for Germany.

Aurelien Tchouameni (France)
Versatile midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni was born in France to Cameroonian parents, which made him previously eligible to feature for the African side.
However, he acquired French nationality and went on to play for Les Bleus, making his debut in September 2022.
