Morocco once again underlined their growing reputation as one of world football’s most fearless tournament teams after eliminating the Netherlands in a gripping FIFA World Cup Round of 32 encounter, prevailing on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw to seal a coveted place in the last 16.

The Atlas Lions were forced to dig deep after seeing victory slip from their grasp on several occasions, displaying remarkable character and composure to outlast the Dutch in a contest that swung wildly before ending in jubilation for the North Africans.

From the opening whistle, Morocco carried the greater attacking threat and nearly seized control inside the opening 20 minutes. Neil El Aynaoui met a teasing corner with a thunderous header destined for the top of the goal, but Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a spectacular reflex stop to preserve parity.

Verbruggen was called into action again moments later when Achraf Hakimi surged forward and unleashed a venomous strike from outside the area. The Brighton goalkeeper responded with another magnificent save, frustrating a Moroccan side that had begun to dominate proceedings.

The Netherlands struggled to impose themselves for much of the first half, managing only a rare sight of goal through Micky van de Ven, whose long-range effort was comfortably gathered by Bono as the teams headed into the interval deadlocked.

After the restart, the contest became increasingly tactical before the Dutch finally found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute. Cody Gakpo timed his run perfectly to collect a pass inside the area before drilling a composed finish beyond Bono to seemingly put the European giants on course for qualification.

With time rapidly running out, Morocco refused to surrender.

Their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time when Chemsdine Talbi delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, where Issa Diop escaped his marker to power a close-range header into the roof of the net, sending the Moroccan supporters into wild celebrations and forcing extra time.

The Atlas Lions nearly completed a remarkable turnaround during the additional 30 minutes. Soufiane Rahimi carved out space inside the penalty box and drove a low effort towards the corner, only for Verbruggen to produce yet another outstanding save that kept Dutch hopes alive.

Unable to be separated after 120 enthralling minutes, the tie headed to the ultimate test from 12 yards.

The shootout began with Teun Koopmeiners confidently converting for the Netherlands before Morocco suffered an early setback as El Aynaoui rattled the crossbar.

The momentum shifted almost immediately when Justin Kluivert struck the post with the Dutch’s second penalty. Rahimi restored Moroccan belief by squeezing his effort past Verbruggen despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball, while Wout Weghorst responded with an emphatic finish.

Talbi then coolly dispatched his spot-kick, piling pressure on the Netherlands, and Quinten Timber cracked under the weight of the occasion by sending his effort astray.

Another dramatic twist followed as Hakimi hit the woodwork, offering the Dutch a route back into the contest. But Bono emerged as Morocco’s hero, diving brilliantly to deny Crysencio Summerville after the winger’s tame effort lacked conviction.

With qualification resting on his shoulders, Ismael Saibari remained ice-cool. The midfielder calmly rolled his penalty into the bottom corner as Verbruggen committed the opposite way, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.

The hard-fought triumph sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where the Atlas Lions will now lock horns with co-hosts Canada as they continue their dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
