Former Nigeria international Benedict Akwuegbu in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has praised Ahmed Musa, describing him as one of the greatest players the country has ever produced, as he paid tribute to Musa following the forward’s decision to retire from international football.
“Musa has done well for Nigeria,” Akwuegbu exclusively told Footy-Africa. “His impact goes beyond football, as he has also been involved in charitable work.
“He has been a great servant to the country and was always highly committed. It is a shame that he is retiring.”
Musa bows out as Nigeria’s most capped player, having made 111 appearances, surpassing Joseph Yobo (100) and Vincent Enyeama (101).
The former Leicester City forward is also Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, with four goals across two tournaments. He was also a part of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.
“He is undoubtedly one of Nigeria’s greatest players of all time,” Akwuegbu added. “He won the AFCON and scored important goals for the country, particularly at the FIFA World Cup.
“His brace against Argentina remains a memorable moment and will live long in the minds of many Nigerians.”
Musa announced his retirement on Wednesday, bringing an end to a 15-year career with the Nigerian national team.
“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” Musa said.
The 33-year-old earned his first call-up to the Super Eagles in April 2010 and made his senior debut five months later, in September, at the age of 17.

He represented Nigeria at Under-20 and Under-23 level before going on to captain the senior national side.
Musa’s final appearance for Nigeria came at the Unity Cup in London earlier this year, when the Super Eagles defeated West African rivals Ghana in the semi-finals.
He follows his former vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, who also retired from international football a few weeks ago.
