Highly-rated Nigeria youth international Abubakar Rufai has joined Australian top-tier side Central Coast Mariners from Nigerian club Mavlon Football Club, completing a move that takes him into professional football abroad for the first time.
An official at Mavlon exclusively told Footy-Africa that the move had been in the works for some time, even though other clubs had also made enquiries about the goalkeeper.
“I am happy for Rufai, who is a tremendous talent that needed a place to take his career to the next level. Everyone remembers him for the penalty shoot-out performance against Egypt, but he is more than that. Yes, he is very good at penalties, but he is also a good shot-stopper and commands his area very well, collecting high balls and dealing with crosses too.”
“The move came at the right time for him, and he will get valuable experience playing in Australia with Central Coast. I believe it is a good step in the right direction at the right time for him. He still has aspirations of playing for the U23 national side and the Super Eagles. We are rooting for him, and I hope he does well there,” he added.
The 18-year-old made a name for himself while featuring for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, when he was brought on in the third-place classification game against Egypt as the match headed to penalties.
He went on to save two penalties in the shoot-out to help Nigeria clinch the bronze medal at the tournament, announcing himself to Nigeria and the continent in dramatic fashion.
Since that performance, he has been tracked by scouts from Croatia and Qatar, but it is the Australians who have given him the chance to start his professional career outside Nigeria. Central Coast Mariners, who play in the A-League, have a strong recent record of developing young talent and giving academy prospects regular first-team opportunities, which is understood to have been a major factor in the move.
The player has already been unveiled by his new club and has linked up with his teammates ahead of the 2026/27 season, which is set to begin in the coming weeks.
